Theme
In the late C19th the Poor Law Guardians started a “scattered homes” system where poor children were taken from their families in the workhouses and housed in small groups with a housekeeper to look after them, eg feeding, hygiene and making sure they went to school. The system was adopted elsewhere in the country. The programme ceased during WWII but many of the houses are still associated with care and shelter for vulnerable people. We are going to ride to the sites of some of these homes and talk about care and ‘upbringing’ ending up in a pub to carry on ….
(As a taster listen to this 30 min BBC documentary about the Scattered Homes; I guarantee you will have tears in yr eyes by the end)
Pls do some prep: pls listen to the documentary.
Trust me, it will enhance yr experience
