Ride Report
Lots of people on the ride – at least 35, and I think some were in the loos when this photo was taken at Walkley Community Centre in the Ruskin Hall (click on photo for higher resolution view)
Civic Heritage 1
We filled up Walkley Community Centre and enjoyed the tea and biscuits and a chance to look round all of the hall and appreciate the art-nouveau/arts & crafts styles used. It’s still with most of the original fittings. And we travelled lesser known paths like through Hillsborough Barracks and visited many sites including the spooky entrance to Wardsend Cemetery and the last, lonesome cementation furnace on Doncaster St before heading back to the Sheffield Tap who were as usual brilliant ‘mine hosts’
They had badged three beers for the Heritage Open Days weekend and many of us sampled glasses of Velo Nights or Discovery which were on last night
and SFNR was on the national WOW pages
and they want to run one of their features on SFNR to jam up your social media
so what are the 12 things one needs to know about SFNR?

Start 6.30 pm Sheffield Tap

Thu 10 – Sun 13 Sep is the “weekend” for Heritage Open Days in Sheffield and across the country. You get a chance to visit buildings and sites that are not regularly or frequently open to the public, or a special event may be put on for the general public. Sheffield Civic Trust organises and coordinates the events and openings in Sheffield.

The map of all the places open is here http://sheffieldcivictrust.org.uk/hod_map/map.php
fancy getting inside the Basil Spence churches in Sheffield? want to have a guided wander in Wardsend Cemetery? etc etc
Explore the map.

Our ride will go past many of the places open in town and up into Crookes and Walkley to return via the Lower Don Valley
I’ve arranged a visit for us to the Art Nouveau Walkley Community Centre where we should get a guided tour.

Our start and finish point, The Sheffield Tap, will be badging one of its beers for the weekend (maybe, a pint of Trust anyone?)
and putting on a talk at 3pm on Sunday 13 Sep about the work and thought behind the refurb of the old waiting and dining rooms as the pub and brewery.
No doubt I will be showing my usual support!

Heads Up! Usual: have tough tyres and a spare inner tube, bring lights and locks
