Sheffield FridayNightRide

we have nothing to lose but our chains

2018/10/26 Sheffield Modern

Ride report. Wow! 35-40 nightriders (it was dark and difficult to count ppl moving about) on the Sheffield Modern SFNR on Friday 26 November.
101st ride and only just on an hour before those who had tickets had to go to the concert, Terry Riley’s ‘In C’, at the University Arts Tower, which was ay-maze-ing for audience and performers.
We rode round Park Hill flats, besides the remnants of Hyde Park flats, looked at a church hall skylight like a Bessemer Converter, over 60s walkways, cosied up to the Epic Development, admired modernist retail around Castle Square & Barkers Pool, before getting to The Moor and then, cutting it all short because Mick had overprepared, round the inner ring road to finish at the Arts Tower.

Folks seemed to enjoy it all and whilst on The Moor contemplating the motorway standard ramp into Atkinson’s car park most indicated a desire to do it more leisurely and complete it at a future date.

Ride Leader: Mick

Sheffield FridayNightRide is delighted to have been asked by Our Favourite Places to contribute to Sheffield Modern – a weekend of discussing and viewing modernist sites and sights in Sheffield.

This short ride will take in not only iconic sites but the unsung sights; the ordinary as well as the celebrated.
Riders will be taken on a route designed to take a critical view about how urban space, transport, and accessibility have been affected by modernism and its subsequent development (or corruption?).
After a short introduction the ride will go to the University via both obvious and imperceptible modernism.
More information, the route, and food for thought as you cycle will be posted on the Sheffield FridayNightRide website – in good time.
Indicative, this may change, map is below

The ride will end by 7.30 at the Arts Tower
for the concert, Sheffield Modern: In C
