2011/01/14 We Live Here

Friday 14 Jan 2011 (Full Moon 19 Jan) The We Live Here Ride Quick note The ride report is here – thanks to Christine Cleaver for getting this together. 45 nightriders max – well done all; some real fun riding around Sheffield, through the inner courtyards of Park Hill Flats; swarming over the tram bridge and even some went around and through Peace Gardens – you were all very naughty! It was a ride to visit buildings and structures, past and present, represented in the work of Jonathan Wilkinson, local artist (www.welivehere.co.uk).

Friday 14 Jan 2011 (Full Moon 19 Jan)
The We Live Here Ride
Start: 6.30 pm
Meeting Place: Car Park West End Pub

Theme: A ride to visit buildings and structures, past and present, represented in the work of Jonathan Wilkinson, local artist (www.welivehere.co.uk). I’ve liked his work since I first saw it three years ago in Rare and Racy and now have three of the framed prints at home. Bring your stories, anecdotes and memories of the places we visit and which are represented in Jonathan’s prints – perhaps we can come up with other places in Sheffield that we would like Jonathan to depict.

Route: Starting at the West End Pub we visit the Arts Tower and then down to Castle Market, spin out on the 5 Weirs Path to Tinsley Viaduct back via cycle paths and quietish roads (stop at the Greyhound in Attercliffe?) then on to and through Park Hill Flats and down into town to visit the cluster of 60s and 70s buildings that have inspired Jonathan [Roxy (O2 Academy), site of the Egg Box, site of the Wedding Cake, Grosvenor Hotel, Moorfoot, Moore St Substation] and then on to Leverton Gardens at the bottom of London Rd and finally finish at Psalter Lane (site of the brutalist Psalter Lane Campus buildings) before we rest at a pub of our choice. About 15 miles

Map: Each POI on the map is linked to Jonathan’s print of that building or site – click on the POI, and then click on the URL that comes up in the box and voila, the print is there.

Heads Up: Should suit any bike – all on roads and paths so have the usual tough tyres for going over glass and bring lights and locks. Medium term weather forecast is for showers so keep an eye on the usual channels to find out if the ride goes that night – if not it will go on Jan 29th, by which time I should be back from a vacation!
