Sheffield FridayNightRide

we have nothing to lose but our chains

2011/04/29 “Be a citizen, not a subject” Republican Ride

Brief ride report!
About 30 of us (three different headcounts!) for yesterday’s ride to Wortley Hall
Great! – any observations/comments for a ride report would be welcome
Tough climb out of Hillsborough and then steady onwards through Grenoside and its lovely woods and then welcome descent into Wortley
Food and company very congenial, tour of the hall, chat in the bar and staff let us use an inner courtyard to keep bikes secure
Fabulous photo of a woman secretary of the Clarion Cycling Club in the Garden Room
Ride back steady up out of Wortley and then turn right at Grenoside to descend to the Birley Stone and take in the view of Sheffield from the North
Then plummet down to Oughtibridge and a beautiful crepuscular ride through Beeley Woods, fresh green leaves just unfurled, swirling glassy dark green river, azure mists of bluebells and two statuesque herons
and final drink and farewells along the way or at the Gardeners’ Rest

Meet 3.30 Paradise Square NB early afternoon, take a snack and enjoy a break at Wortley Hall, come back early evening

Heads up! Mostly on roads except for maybe Club Mill Rd along the east side of the Don – haven’t been along it lately anyone any info on whether the surface has been metalled?

Weather forecast promising

A ride to take advantage of the extra Bank Holiday and to take our minds off the Royal Wedding.
Deck your bikes with red flags put on your own tiaras and crowns and, as its a Bank Holiday,
start a bit earlier to visit Wortley Hall, labour’s holiday home, an oasis of socialism in S Yorkshire,
have a drink, relax in the fabulous grounds, mooch around the Hall, chat with companions, take a snack in the bar (we can’t get a booking for tea)
and have an early evening ride back – and then join a Sheffield FNR social drink at the end –
maybe at the Gardener’s Rest, Neepsend Lane – can’t do food as its a music night so join in with da nightriders’ blooz,

Oohh I rode out this evening,
with my bike between my legs,
Oohh I rode out this eee-ve-ning,
with my bike between my legs
that old devil moon was shining
as we sped through Nether Edge
