2018/06/29 The Dragon of Wantley

Ride report: It was a warm ,v sunny evening for the 33 riders who cycled up out of Hillsborough to climb to Worrall, and along the ridge towards Bradfield, turning right and go over the moors and drop down (amazing twists and turns!) to Ewden and then cycled along More Hall Reservoir before a final short precipitous ascent to Bitholmes Wood to see the Dragon of Wantley. The return was down the Stocksbridge Rd, to Oughtibridge then through the sublime dappled-in-the-evening-sunlight path on Beeley Woods to Clay Wheels Lane and Hillsborough and then followed the Penistone Rd to Neepsend to finish with beer and chat in the surreal garden of the Gardener’s Rest. 18 miles and just a perfect night out!

The tale of the Dragon of Wantley is an allegory about a greedy rapacious landlord who was bested by a valiant knight in a court of law – or is it? Come along and find out! Many thanks to Lenny Fairhall for bringing it to our attention.

We cycle to see this sculpture of the Dragon of Wantley above Moore Hall

Ride starts at Hillsborough Park bandstand and terminates at the Gardeners Rest (anyone wanting to get back to the Park will be directed) Ample parking at the Park for out-of-towners.
