Sheffield FridayNightRide

we have nothing to lose but our chains

2014/01/24 The Ring Cycle

The Ring Cycle Ride report: On a wet, rainy but mild evening nine of us incl 3 people new to SFNR gathered outside the Sheffield Tap. And we did a bit of it, the first ‘ring’, until we got back to the Tap and decided to go in to dry out on the outside and wet our whistles on the inside. Then we all drank beer of our choice and had a really good chat with intros and catch-ups. Some had learned new routes and places and two joined CycleSheffield – thanks.

Rita, from Hungary, and Jam, from the USA, both now living in Sheffield, also discussed reviving Sheffield Critical Mass – if indeed it is moribund. Anybody know?
If you do know whether Critical Mass still occurs, then pls let me know, these two women had some interesting ideas.

I will probably do this ride again at some time as an ‘impromptu’ SFNR when the variables of calendar, energy and weather are auspicious.

Start Sheffield Tap. Time 7pm

Theme: CycleSheffield is hosting a meeting of cycle campaign groups from across the country on Saturday 25 January. The campaign is Space for Cycling. Some delegates from across the country will be in town on the Friday night. And we have already had requests for a FridayNightRide from some of the delegates. (We did a welcome to SHF ride for the CycleNation conference in 2011 and people still talk about it).

This ride is going to show off the good, bad and ugly of cycle facilities in Sheffield for yourselves and visitors – just what is the Space for Cycling in Sheffield?

The suggested route is approx 13 miles of concentric and intersecting loops on various ring and linear cycle routes in and around the city centre starting and finishing at the Sheffield Tap.

Map: provisional route in black but subject to change – warning you have to follow this closely but the route is written down as well

Heads up! Bring lights and locks!! The usual Sheffield streets and paths – so tough tyres, bring a spare tube.

Time tbd because we will take advice from delegates as some will be here on the Friday afternoon for a CTC meeting and some may get straight off the train and join the ride.
